Segambut Yong Tau Foo

Segambut Yong Tau Foo

It has been a month, since I last had Yong Tau Foo at the Naga Jolokia (Ghost Chilli) Yong Tau Foo. And all of a sudden, I was craving for Yong Tau Foo for lunch on one particular weekday. Be that as it may, it wasn’t ideal for me to drive all the way to Jinjang Utara just to have my favourite Yong Tau Foo, given that I’ve only an hour of lunch time. Hence, I called up hubby, whose workplace is thankfully just a couple of minutes drive from mine. In order to satisfy my crave, he obliged to bring me to the Segambut Yong Tau Foo restaurant, which is located at Jalan Ipoh.

Parking can sometimes be an issue, as such, you may expect customers to double-park your car. Good thing is that, there is no parking fee. The limited seats can also be another issue if you come at peak hours. Lucky for us, we went there close to 2pm when there were ample parking spaces and seats for us. This translated to a shorter waiting time for our food. Ordering the food is simple, as all you need to do is to jot down your orders in a form (similar to the Old Town White Coffee outlets). The shop that previously occupied this place also sold Yong Tau Foo. But due to some tenancy issues, they have shifted to the nearby Cairnhill Hotel. We have tried both restaurants and honestly, there isn’t much difference in their tastes and prices.

Another good thing about this restaurant is that, it has other selection of foods as well. There are stalls that sell “rojak” (a traditional fruit and vegetable salad), “popiah” (fresh spring rolls) as well as “pow” (Chinese pastries).

I haven’t tried the “rojak” or the “popiah” before, but I saw nearly all customers ordered them. So, I presume they must be tasty and I’ll definitely give them a try the next round. Having said that, you should never miss the Kee Mei Siew Pow bakery stall, which sells a variety of Chinese pastries. This stall is forever crowded with customers buying loads of breads and buns. The sweet smelling aroma of the pastries can really tempt people to check out the stall. Despite being very busy, the lady owner never fails to smile and greet all her customers.

I’ve only tried the egg tart, but there’s nothing really special about it. And plus, I think it’s slightly pricey for a small tart to cost RM1.70. That aside, you should try its signature pastry, Kee Mei siew pow – pork bun that is filled with sweet barbecue pork. You’re sure to appreciate the succulence of its fillings with each bite. Surprisingly, each bun was only RM2 and it was so fresh that even when I kept it till the next day, it still tasted good.

Back to the our main dish, the Yong Tau Foo is served with starchy black bean paste gravy and sprinkled with generous amount of fresh scallions. Each piece of Yong Tau Foo costs approximately RM1.40, which is RM0.10 cheaper than the ones at Naga Jolokia Yong Tau Foo, except that they’re also smaller in size.

For the amount of Yong Tau Foo we had, it only costed us RM21.95 (inclusive of 6% GST). So, I’d say it was a pretty reasonable meal. Unanimously, both hubby and I still prefer the Naga Jolokia Yong Tau Foo more than the Segambut Yong Tau Foo, mainly because of the incredible chilli paste that’s available in the former. Nonetheless, I’d still recommend this place if you happen to be in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.
